I like this image alot. It brings up a few different moods in my opinion. First is serenity, it seems very pleasant and relaxing, but there is also the emptiness or loneliness to it as well. I guess that is what makes it such a great photograph. The only thing that bothers me with the image is the horizon line, if that was straight it would make this image much better.
This image overlaps two of Barrett’s photographic categories. It could be placed in the explanatory category, since the subject matter depicts a specific place and time. However it seems the photographer’s intent is to beautifully capture a beautiful landscape. This would place the photograph in the aesthetically evaluative category. The repetition of horizontal line orientation as found in the horizon line, rows of waves, and the shoreline creates a feeling of calm, serenity and stability. ( I agree with Tim that the horizon line needs to be adjusted!) According to color psychology another calming aspect to the photo is its muted blue and grey tones. The weathered red of one of the three boats interrupts the dominant color palette which adds visual interest and energy.
