The function of this portrait places it in Barrett’s aesthetically evaluative category. The viewer is invited to consider the beauty of a young female. The angle and cropping offers an intimate vantage point. The lighting is soft, diffused and indirect and the focus is soft. Both of these choices further smooth the texture of her youthful skin, hair, eyebrows and eyelashes. The viewer is drawn to first examine her eye, then move down her nose to her lips, up the curve of her cheek and back to her eye. The dark curtain of hair and the hand act as barriers that help keep the viewer focused on her features. There is a narrative quality to the photo – whose hand is in the image? While the hand most likely belongs to the young woman it could be the caressing hand of the viewer.
